Internships

The Alliance is offering an exciting internship course in both the Beijing BLCU and Shanghai SUFE. Internships are available in the spring, summer, and fall terms.

Placements

In Beijing, the internship placements include Chinese and foreign businesses, NGOs, and government organizations. We will make every effort to match the placements with your interests. Previous BLCU students interned with:

  • Samsung OpenTide China, a convergent management and digital marketing consulting firm, with over 400 specialists working in 35 cities in China, providing services in consulting,  web designing and web solutions
  • International Red Cross, an independent, neutral organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of war and other situations of violence
  • E. & J. Gallo Winery, the largest privately owned winery in the world, headquartered in Modesto, California, with over 75 years experience in bringing good value wine to the wine consumer all over the world, currently commanding the largest wine market share in China among all imported wines
  • Cable News Network (CNN), a major English language television network and the first station to provide 24-hour television news coverage. Globally, CNN has combined branded networks and services that are available to more than 1.5 billion people in over 212 countries and territories
  • Ai Media, a Hong Kong based British consulting/PR/marketing firm, focused on bridging foreign media companies with Chinese communication networks 
  • Jones, Lang & LaSalle (JLL), a financial and professional services firm specializing in real estate services in investment management.  JLL is the largest real estate company in Asia and one of the largest in the world. They have been involved with many projects in China as well as other Asian countries, including some Olympic facilities and major commercial buildings in Beijing.
  • Joey Art Gallery, an art gallery, owned and run by a well known art critic and curator, which aims to promote Chinese contemporary art worldwide by representing emerging and overlooked artists
  • Text 100, a global technology specialist PR firm  with offices in more than 40 cities around the world
  • American Chamber of Commerce, a non-profit organization representing  US companies and individuals doing business in China.  AmCham-China's membership comprises more than 2,700 individuals from over 1,200 companies
  • IMC – Beijing (International Medical Center), offers high-quality medical care to expatriates living and working in the greater Beijing area as well as local nationals
  • The China Rehabilitation Research Center, International Medical Center, Peking University Medical School Hospital, PLA No.306 Hospital, and The Intech Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, different hospitals and medicial care centers in Beijing (state owned, private owned, foreign, military, and a China-Sweden joint venture)
  • CERNET-Blackboard Information Technology (Beijing) Co. Ltd, a joint venture company founded by Blackboard Inc., a worldwide leading e-Learning solution provider, and CERNET, a spin-off of the Chinese Ministry of Education and education internet access and services provider. Their goal is to provide China’s educational market with worldwide leading online education service
  • Lv Yuan (Green Garden) School, providing education to Migrant workers’ children

BLCU Internship Guidelines

Pre-Requisites

You must have completed 3 semesters of Chinese to participate in the internship.

Availability

Spots are competitive. You will need to apply for the internship course when you complete the Course Selection Form.

Credit and Course Requirements

The internship course is worth 3 credits and will replace one of the area studies courses usually taken at BLCU.

Credit is awarded for the academic component of the internship. Interns will complete a research project, including a 5,000 word paper (in English). The work will be supervised throughout the term by a faculty advisor, Dr. Matt Ferchen, who will meet with the student individually every two weeks. To view Dr. Ferchen's CV, please click here.

In the fall and spring semesters, interns will spend 10-12 hours per week (or 120 hours a semester) at the internship site. During the summer term, interns will spend 20 hours per week at the internship site. (Note that in addition to language, summer students only take one area studies course. If a student selects the internship course, they will not take any other content courses.)
